Ram Navami 2026: How the Surya Tilak Lights Up Ram Janmabhoomi Temple
People across India are celebrating Ram Navami today, and in Ayodhya, the Surya Tilak remains the most awaited moment. At exactly noon, a beam of sunlight falls directly on the forehead of Ram Lalla, creating what devotees see as a divine tilak.
This moment lasts only a few minutes, but it doesn’t happen by chance. Experts carefully plan and align the entire process using precise engineering.
How the Surya Tilak Works Inside the Temple
The Surya Tilak works by directing sunlight with high precision. A narrow beam of light, about 5.8 cm wide, travels exactly to the idol’s forehead.
Engineers designed a system of four mirrors and four lenses to guide the sunlight. The light enters from the top of the temple and moves step by step into the Garbha Griha. Around midday, the alignment becomes perfect, and the beam focuses on the idol’s forehead for about 3 to 3.5 minutes.
The Science and Engineering Behind the Phenomenon
The system uses an advanced opto-mechanical design with multiple precision components.
A tilt mechanism adjusts the first mirror and sets the direction for the entire light path. This alignment ensures that the light moves correctly through each mirror and lens. As the beam travels forward, each component sharpens its focus.
At the final stage, the last mirror and lens concentrate the light onto the forehead of Ram Lalla, who faces east. The system follows solar tracking principles, which help maintain accurate alignment every year on Ram Navami.
Materials, Design, and Safety Measures
Engineers built the structure for durability and long-term use. They used brass to make pipes, elbows, and enclosures. The mirrors and lenses also support long-lasting performance.
They coated the inner surfaces black to reduce light scattering and keep the beam sharp. To control heat, they installed an infrared filter at the top opening. This filter allows sunlight to pass while blocking excess heat from reaching the idol.
A Perfect Blend of Faith and Technology
The Surya Tilak may look simple, but it reflects a powerful combination of tradition and modern engineering. In just a few minutes, it showcases deep devotion along with precise scientific planning, making it one of the most special highlights of Ram Navami celebrations in Ayodhya.
