Delhi Bus Rape Incident Sparks Fresh Comparisons to the Nirbhaya Case After 14 Years

Delhi Bus Horror Revives Nirbhaya Memories After Woman Alleges Gang Rape in Moving Bus

Nearly 14 years after the shocking Nirbhaya case shook the nation, another alleged sexual assault inside a moving bus in Delhi has triggered outrage and renewed concerns over women’s safety in the capital.

According to police, a 30-year-old woman alleged that two men sexually assaulted her inside a moving sleeper bus on Monday night while the vehicle travelled through parts of outer Delhi.

Woman Allegedly Dragged Into Bus Near Saraswati Vihar

Investigators said the woman had finished work at a factory in Mangolpuri and was heading home to Pitampura. She reached the B-block bus stand in the Saraswati Vihar area late at night.

The woman told police that she approached a man standing near a Bihar-registered sleeper bus to ask for the time. The accused allegedly signalled her to come closer and then forcibly pulled her inside the vehicle.

Police said the bus continued moving towards Nangloi while two men allegedly assaulted her inside. Officers also revealed that curtains covered the bus windows, making it difficult for people outside to notice anything suspicious.

Incident Draws Comparisons With Nirbhaya Case

The case has drawn strong reactions from political leaders and the public because of its similarities to the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh criticised the law-and-order situation in Delhi and called the incident “a repetition of the Nirbhaya case.” He questioned the safety measures meant to protect women in the national capital.

The 2012 Nirbhaya case had sparked nationwide protests and led to major changes in India’s rape laws. Following the incident, authorities introduced stricter legal provisions and several women’s safety measures. However, the latest case has once again raised serious concerns about how effectively those measures work on the ground.

Accused Arrested After Woman Reports Incident

Police said the accused later abandoned the woman near Nangloi Metro station before fleeing the area.

The survivor contacted police soon after the incident. Officers reached the spot and shifted her to Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital for medical examination.

Delhi Police registered an FIR under gang rape charges and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Police have arrested the two accused, identified as driver Umesh and conductor Ramendra. Authorities later sent both men to judicial custody while the investigation continues.
