Jabalpur Boat Tragedy: 9 Dead After Cruise Capsizes at Bargi Dam, Chilling Video Surfaces
A tragic boat accident in Jabalpur has claimed nine lives after a tourist cruise capsized in the waters of the Bargi Dam. Meanwhile, a disturbing video recorded just moments before the incident has surfaced online, capturing the calm before the disaster.
Emotional Scene: Mother and Son Found Embracing
On Friday, rescue teams recovered the bodies of a mother and her four-year-old son, who were found embracing each other in their final moments. This heartbreaking discovery has intensified the grief surrounding the incident.
Viral Video Shows Calm Before Chaos
In the now-viral footage, tourists can be seen enjoying pleasant weather and strong winds on the cruise. At first, everything appears normal, with passengers soaking in the cool breeze. However, the powerful gusts are clearly visible in the video, hinting at the danger that was about to unfold.
Within minutes, the weather conditions worsened dramatically. Consequently, the boat lost balance and capsized, leading to the tragic loss of all nine victims.
Lack of Life Jackets Raises Serious Concerns
Notably, the video also reveals that many passengers were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. Later, some individuals managed to wear safety gear, which significantly contributed to saving lives. According to officials, nearly 25 people survived due to the use of life jackets and timely rescue efforts.
What Exactly Happened at Bargi Dam?
The accident took place on Thursday evening near Khamaria Island, when a sudden storm engulfed the area. As a result, strong winds and rising water levels destabilized the boat, eventually causing it to overturn.
So far, 28 passengers have been rescued, while six individuals remain missing. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to nine after additional bodies were recovered during Friday’s search operation.
Massive Rescue Operation Underway
Currently, a large-scale rescue operation is in progress, involving teams from the Indian Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
However, low visibility and challenging conditions continue to hamper efforts. Officials fear that more victims may still be trapped inside the wreckage.
Army Divers Deployed from Agra
In addition, specialized diving teams from Agra were airlifted overnight to assist in the operation. So far, Army divers have recovered multiple bodies and are continuing search efforts in the reservoir.
Eyewitnesses Reveal Warning Signs Ignored
According to eyewitnesses, the weather deteriorated rapidly, and several passengers sensed danger early on. In fact, some reportedly urged the crew to turn back. However, their warnings were allegedly ignored, and the boat continued drifting before capsizing.
Meanwhile, local residents played a crucial role in the rescue. Using ropes, they helped pull survivors—especially those wearing life jackets—to safety.
Administration Response and Investigation
Deputy Inspector General Atul Singh stated that the boat would only be retrieved once authorities confirm that no one remains trapped inside.
Furthermore, Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi confirmed that four bodies were recovered on Thursday, while five more were found on Friday morning. He also announced a formal investigation into the incident, particularly focusing on alleged negligence regarding safety measures.
Government Action and Compensation Announced
Following the tragedy, the state government has banned the operation of similar cruise boats until further notice. Additionally, stricter safety regulations are expected to be enforced.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families. He announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
A Preventable Tragedy?
Ultimately, the Jabalpur boat accident raises serious questions about safety compliance and preparedness. While rescue operations continue, the focus now shifts to accountability and ensuring that such a tragedy is never repeated.
